They all use three planetary gearsets, three driving clutches, three holding clutches, and an overrunning clutch. The 66RFE has its torque converter recessed inside the case, while it sticks out of the 68RFE.Īll three transmissions, as used in 2012 and onwards, have a single-piece case, two-stage pump (which shuts the secondary side at higher speeds, for efficiency), and similar valve bodies. The 66RFE resembles the 545RFE from the outside, but shares its extension housing and output shaft with the 68RFE. The 66 and 68 have one set of splines on the overdrive shaft the 545/65 has two. Service notes: 66RFE and 68RFE automatic transmissions The 2012 66RFE and 68RFE had a wider overall gear range than the 545RFE/65RFE they can be identified with a label on the transmission case that shows the part number and build sequence (also stamped into the case, below the label). Partly for that reason, in 2012, when Ram started selling a higher-output Cummins diesel truck (with 800 lb-ft of torque), they beefed up the torque converter and modified the shift algorithms for durability. Owners pointed to weak spots in the 2007-11 units, particularly the torque converter. It used a computer that did not allow retrofits into earlier trucks. But at least I can get the parts ordered and have them waiting. The torque converter locked up in every forward gear except first, based on temperature, gear, tow/haul mode, and exhaust brake activation. I've been working both jobs a lot and with stupid Daylight Saving Time kicked in, there's not enough daylight left after my part time job.
LCATION MOPAR DODGE RAM PRESSURE SENSOR 545RFE TRANSMISSION PLUS
I can romp on it at take off and it'll jump up and go! Kinda scared to really get on it when it does this as I'm afraid I'll twist the driveshaft or an axle! lol Plus it hits each gear so hard that, if the tires weren't so big, they'd probably bark each time.Īnyway, I guess replacing both sensors isn't on my long list of honey do's for the D. That's when I really notice those 3.56 gears in it. Now, I do like the feeling of it when it acts up? like when I have to get on it to shift. Then there are sluggish days also where it just doesn't seem to get up to speed without really getting in it. Plus, as I said, there are days when it simply runs normal with no problems. Also, if I get a chance like at a red light, I can shut off the motor and restart and it runs normal again. What sucks about it is, when I'm in my neighborhood or say a school zone and have to do 20MPH, it won't shift! So here I am cruising at 3000RPM unless I romp on it to make it shift and that's not prudent in a school zone. Some days I have to get into the gas hard to get it to shift and other days it runs normal. I'm assuming the transmission is still running good for you? Looks like I'll be replacing these parts on my my '98 D as well as my issues are pretty much the same as yours. I greatly appreciate any help because I'm not sure where to go now with this issue.

I guess too many of them were failing and maybe they realized they couldn't sell them for the same price anymore. Interesting fact he told me was how Mopar originally sold the governor solenoid and pressure sensor many years ago, maybe when this transmission was newer, and the price was around $400 before they lowered the cost. So, what could my issue be? It doesn't seem like my transmission is going to die on me any time soon and he said it looks good on the inside as far as wear and tear go so I don't think I'll have to do a rebuild if I can isolate what this problem might be. He did some reading today and found where it could be electrical connectors contributing to the problem, but he checked those and they looked okay to him. He seemed puzzled, as he just did a similar job on another 46RE transmission (I think they're the 518's?) and it solved the problem they were having which was identical to mine. I had the owner of the shop change everything out today and things went fine, but the problem appears to be still there. It sounds to me like this is a common problem on the 46RE's and these parts usually solve it. So I bought the parts, filter, new gasket and ATF4 fluid and went to a good local transmission shop in my town.

If I didn't manually shift, then the rpm's would rev up considerably as I accelerated and finally it'd shift into another gear almost with a "slam." After doing considerable research, not only on this forum but several places on the internet, it seemed my problem wasn't too difficult? Governor Solenoid and Pressure Sensor. Here's my story: My transmission started acting up about 3-4 weeks ago when it appeared I didn't have first gear unless I manually shifted it myself. I can't figure out why this is happening, maybe it's happened to some of you before.
